Suriname: Justice Under Fire
Justice and democracy are at stake in Suriname's current constitutional deadlock. President Dési Bouterse’s government has passed a law granting the president retroactive amnesty for the horrific crimes he committed as the leader of a military dictatorship during the 1980s. The ramifications of this decision will prove critical for the young democracy, whose troubled past will not cease to haunt Surinamese citizens until Bouterse is brought to justice.
